#1 auntie asked:
I am a great cook, I love cooking and I am always asked to cater a party. I would love to open up a cafe at the Marina in my home town, but I don’t have money and I don’t want to go into debt. I also do not know where to start doing research or how to write an effective business plan that’s simple. Please help me know where to begin and how to be successful rather than a mistake.
I do have a college degree, but not in culinary and I can’t afford culinary school although it is a dream.

First off get a small business loan and take a small business course.
Do your business plan and get investor to put their money into your idea.
just open a small coffee shop serving coffee and baked breads etc, like a miny starbucks. Make a business plan, listing stuff like your expected income and expenditure and list plans to make money and present it to your bank. With this you may be able to get a loan and start up your business. After getting the right permits look for an ideal building to rent. Buy the right equipment and advertise and you may get success.
if you need help writing a buiness plan dont take advice froma anyone on Yahoo answers. Talk to a financial adviser, who will help you write on and find ways for you to minimise or wipeout startup debt.
Good luck with your business and go with your heart (but still keep your head on)
You could always start my finding a local company who would like a taste of home cooking – cafe style in the workplace at their expense.
Or arrange coffee mornings at your home or local church/ hall etc – that will get you started and you can advertise through word of mouth and local newspapers.
You might gain sponsors through this as well as gain some starting cash.
Or buy a cheap catering van, with help from a loan, like this on eBay – (UK)
(US)
Start with the Small Business Administration, and figure on getting some experience somewhere. If you have never worked for, or run a restaurant how do you expect to be able to deal with the business?
You will find that running any business is a lot more difficult than you thought, and keeps you busy a lot longer hours than you can possibly imagine.
A restaurant, in particular, is extremely hard work, and building a reputation for good food in your community is key to success.
If you don’t mind putting in 16 plus hours a day, and having to deal with a multitude of problems, and the public, then good luck, but get your experience first.
No one is going to let you start at the top, but, in less than a year, or two, you will have enough experience to actually run a restaurant successfully, if you apply yourself.
Get a job as cook and save some money. Later on invest that money and get yourself a business.
Passion and Drive is not enough for sucess.
Turn your passion into a hobby then into a business. Start with your local farmers market (booth fees should be kept to a minimal) and sell your homemade products and additional foods items that people enjoy, (bottled water, coffee, etc). Next goto vistaprint.com and get your free business cards, and sign up for a website through yahoo, so you create a presence your business. This will help grow your hobby into a business that supports itself. Good luck!
You don’t. A cafe is a business that requires capital. Unless you can find investors to provide funds for you or a bank that can give you a loan, this is not a business that you can start for only $5,000. If your resources are not enough, cashflow will be extremely tight and there is a very high chance that the business will fail. The #1 reason why businesses fail is due to lack of capital, and without money and no experience in the business, you stand a formidable challenge.
From the article “How to Start a Business with Little Cash” here are some tips on how you can start a business and earn more money even if you are short of cash today:
1. Find a business that you can start for little money (e.g. starting a personal chef business where you cook meals for families and cater is cheaper than opening a cafe)
2. Consider your time and effort – if you have little cash, you may have to work harder for the money because you will have no resource to outsource or employ others to do certain tasks for you; or you have no money to buy equipment so you can only do certain things the long way
3. Get your creative juices flowing. With no money, the only thing you have is your imagination. Be creative and find ways to get things done
4. Be prepared to do all the work yourself – from doing your business plan, finding financing, writing emails, shipping and handling, marketing or whatever processes your business requires.
5. Be prepared to invite investors – you may need financing help from someone down the road so be prepared to share some of the pie.
